LED Flashlight Power Saving Mod

By | September 13, 2013

I’m quite disappointed about how fast my LED flashlight drains its battery. This mod will reduce the current consumption and hopefully still give enough light for cycling.

Current draw before: 1.6A at 1.2V at full power.

The trick is to replace the current measurement resistor. The larger the value, the lower the current through the LED. The unmodified controller board has a 0.27 ohm resistor. Let’s replace it by 4 times larger value 1.0 ohm resistor.

Current after the mod is as expected, 4 times lower: 0.37A at full power, 0.2A in blinking mode and 0.1A in low power.

Tools needed: hot air soldering station, tweezers, replacement resistor (0805 package)
